Raleigh Barber Promotes Men’s Health through Unique Initiative

Reggie Winston, a well-known Raleigh barber, has taken his relationship with his clients to a new level by focusing on their health. With his non-profit Grooming Resources and Opportunities, he has turned his barbershop into an intervention point addressing health disparities in Black and brown communities.

Zinfindale Smith, a longtime client, asserts that he has learned the importance of regular health check-ups and asking questions during these visits. This was part of the messaging at the recent Men’s Health and Wellness fair held at the Bar Ber Shop.

The fair offered blood pressure and STD screenings, along with mental health check-ins. Winston emphasized the barbershop’s role as a safe space for open conversations, especially for men, thereby breaking gender stereotypes and encouraging emotional expression.

Dr. Rodney Harris, Clinical Mental Health Counselor, highlighted the event’s focus on mental health. He said, “We found that if we offer blood pressure screenings and some of these checks, it would allow us to tap into the mental health component.” Parents of young boys have found this aspect particularly beneficial, boosting the boys’ self-esteem alongside a fresh haircut.
