TL/DR –

Minnesota is set to experience two rounds of significant spring snow over the coming days, potentially bringing the season’s snowfall total to half or more by Tuesday. The first weather system, bringing light snow, is expected Thursday evening and could result in 2-4 inches of snow across most of Minnesota. The second, longer-lasting system with more precipitation is forecasted for Sunday through Tuesday and may bring even more snow, with the potential for rain on Monday.

Storm One: Primarily Overnight Snowfall

The first storm is forecasted to bring light snow to western Minnesota Thursday evening, reaching the Twin Cities by 9 p.m. The majority of the steady snow will occur overnight, with 2-4 inches expected for most areas.

By Friday morning, the storm should exit Minnesota. Travel impacts, especially on untreated roads, are anticipated for the morning commute. The storm’s departure will bring some sunshine Friday afternoon and evening, which should help melt some accumulated snow.

Storm Two: More Snow Plus Rain Sunday to Tuesday

After a mostly quiet Saturday, Sunday afternoon will see the start of the second storm with steady snow and strong winds.

Preparations are underway at the MSP Airport and MnDOT due to the convergence of spring break and the snowstorms.

This second storm will last longer, contain more moisture, and bring higher precipitation chances that could last into Tuesday. More snow is expected from this system, along with some rain on Monday. The exact amounts of rain vs. snow are still undetermined. Travel conditions are expected to be poor on Sunday and Monday morning, with the impacts on Tuesday and beyond still uncertain.

Potential Snow Totals by Tuesday

As of Thursday, the Twin Cities has recorded 14.3 inches of snow this season, with 7 inches in February being the snowiest month. These totals may change with the upcoming storms.

A more precise forecast of the second storm’s snow totals will be available after the first storm is over. Some areas could see several inches of snow by Friday and then several more by Tuesday.

If the Twin Cities receive 7 or more inches of snow by the end of the second storm, March could become the snowiest month of the season in the metro. Anything over 7.2 inches will account for more than half of the season’s snowfall total.
