A new poll from the Washington Post and the University of Maryland shows a competitive race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Maryland. The poll shows current Congressman David Trone ahead at 34%, but closely followed by Prince George’s County Executive and Democratic candidate Angela Alsobrooks at 27%. There are still many undecided voters, and both candidates have released positive statements about the upcoming election, with Trone emphasizing his legislative track record and Alsobrooks highlighting her grassroots campaign.

Maryland’s U.S. Senate Race: The Tight Contest for Democrat Nomination Just Got Tighter

The upcoming tight Democratic race for Maryland’s U.S. Senate between Angela Alsobrooks and David Trone reveals the potential for an intense battle. This information is supported by a new Washington Post-UMD poll which sampled over 1000 registered Maryland voters. The poll shows Trone at 34% while Alsobrooks at 27%, however, a good number of Democrats remain undecided.

Considering Trone’s significant campaign spending to date, Todd Eberle from the Saint Mary’s College of Maryland believes the slight lead is not an assurance of victory. He further emphasizes that Alsobrooks stands a chance to bridge the gap. In the Democratic contest, this race remains far from being decided. Angela Alsobrooks’ recent endorsement by Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates in a new campaign ad can swing the odds in her favour, coupled with her grassroots campaign.

On the other hand, Trone’s campaign asserts that he is the only candidate capable of opposing extremist Republican plans to ban abortion, suppress the right to vote, and cut Social Security for Maryland seniors. Trone has consistently shown that he is leading the Democratic primary race due to his track record of passing meaningful legislation for Maryland families in Washington. However, with former governor and Republican frontrunner Larry Hogan leading the poll at 49%, the chances of either Trone or Alsobrooks winning remain uncertain. Regardless of the outcome, the winner will have a tough task ahead in the November race against Hogan.
