Plane Crash in Afton, Minnesota Claims Two Lives

Two men died in a small plane crash near a residential home in Afton, Minnesota on Saturday, according to local officials. The incident occurred on the 15000 block of Afton Hills Drive South.

Reports of a possible explosion started pouring into the Washington County’s dispatch center around 9:43 a.m. Upon arrival, emergency crews found a small airplane ablaze near a house. The victims, an 85-year-old from White Bear Lake and a 65-year-old from Baytown Township, were pronounced dead at the scene.

“I heard the engine stalling out. Suddenly, it stopped, and then I saw a plane plummeting down from the sky,” described a local resident, Lisa, to FOX 9. “A huge cloud of black smoke and a loud crash followed.”

The ill-fated plane had taken off from Lake Elmo Airport shortly before the tragedy. By the time the neighbors reached the crash site, the plane was fully engulfed in flames – creating a plume of black smoke. “It seemed to explode just seconds after the crash,” said Lisa.

Authorities confirmed that the nearby house wasn’t damaged, except for some smoke damage to the garage. Fortunately, the family inside the house at the time remained safe. “The residents were home and heard some of what happened. Their house remained undamaged,” added Laura Perkins from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

The crashed airplane was a Globe GC1, as per the National Transportation Safety Board, who are currently investigating the incident. The cause of the crash has yet to be determined.
