WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. – A group of women in Washtenaw County are marking International Women’s Day with construction tools.

This activity is part of the annual Women Build campaign by Habitat for Humanity Huron Valley.

“Today’s volunteers lead teams throughout the year, mainly in spring and summer,” said Leah Tessman of Habitat for Humanity Huron Valley. “Their contribution includes hands-on construction and fundraising towards a $75,000 goal.”

Last year, these volunteers erected walls of a Ypsilanti home on Women’s Day. This year, they landscaped the front and back yard and built a storage shed.

While transforming future homeowners’ lives through these projects, Habitat for Humanity Huron Valley also raises awareness about a critical societal issue.

“Most low to mid-income households are single female-led. Acquiring affordable housing can be challenging for them,” Tessman said. “We aim to support and highlight this difficulty women face in securing homes.”

Last year, 110 women participated in the Women Build campaign, dedicating 740 volunteer hours and raising over $70,000, impacting the community substantially.
