A man was critically injured after being shot multiple times on a Brooklyn subway platform Thursday afternoon. The violent exchange took place on the northbound platform of the A/C line at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station just before 5 p.m.
Authorities immediately apprehended a person of interest at the scene, where a gun was also recovered. Reports indicate the victim was the original owner of the firearm.
Details of the Subway Shooting Incident
According to police, the confrontation began when a 36-year-old man acting aggressively approached a 32-year-old man on the train at Nostrand Avenue. The older man initially brandished a knife before producing a gun, which the other man managed to seize and use against him.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene with passengers running, falling and huddling together in fear. Police entered the train with guns drawn, directing everyone to stay down. Service at the station was disrupted due to the incident.
Rising Gun Violence in Transit System
MTA CEO Janno Lieber spoke about the recent uptick in gun violence in New York’s transit system, urging for stronger measures against firearms. To date, there have been eight shooting victims in the transit system this year, compared to only one in the same period last year. Gun arrests in the transit system also saw an increase, with 17 this year versus eight last year.
Efforts to Improve Subway Security
The incident comes as Governor Kathy Hochul has deployed National Guard troops to enhance security in response to rising subway crime concerns.
At present, it’s unknown whether the man who fired the gun will face charges, or if it will be ruled as self-defense.
