36 Pennsylvania High Schools Win Governor’s Civic Engagement Awards

On May 24, 2024, the Pennsylvania departments of State and Education proudly announced that 36 high schools across the Commonwealth won the Governor’s Civic Engagement Awards (GCEA) during the 2023-24 academic year.

Gold and Silver Level Awards

18 schools achieved Gold Level Awards, having registered at least 85 percent of their eligible students to vote. 18 other schools achieved Silver Level Awards, registering at least 65 percent of their eligible students. In total, approximately 160 students registered over 3,300 peers to vote, thus earning their schools a gold or silver-level award.

Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt commended the students for their efforts, emphasizing the importance of engaging the next generation of voters for the vitality of our democracy.

Student Poll Worker Awards

20 students from across the state also received Student Poll Worker Awards for their participation in a voter registration event at their school and service as poll workers on Election Day.

As a pivotal election approaches, Secretary of Education Dr. Khalid N. Mumin underlines the importance of young people making their voices heard through voting. He commended this year’s GCEA winners for understanding that democracy is not a spectator sport, and their efforts will have a national impact.

The awards ceremony will be livestreamed virtually at 10 a.m. on May 29 on the Department of State’s Facebook and PACast pages.
