Volvo Trucks Receives $208M Energy Department Grant Boosting Job Creation
US Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine announced that Mack and Volvo Trucks will receive over $208 million in federal funding through the Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant Program of the Department of Energy. The grant, made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act, will enhance operations, maintain 7,900 union jobs, and create 295 new jobs across Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. It aims to support electric heavy-duty vehicle production with a mixed model assembly line at Volvo’s New River Valley (NRV) truck manufacturing facility.
Senator Warner hailed the investment in domestic clean vehicle manufacturing, stating it will transform Volvo’s NRV operations, bring jobs, and boost the local economy. Senator Kaine emphasized that the Act’s investments are coming to Volvo Trucks due to their efforts in expanding operations in the New River Valley and commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Volvo Trucks’ NRV facility is the largest Volvo Trucks manufacturing unit globally and the second-largest employer in the New River Valley, supporting 3,600 jobs in Dublin. The funding will also boost the production of electric heavy-duty vehicles and the necessary supporting infrastructure.
The Inflation Reduction Act earmarked $2 billion for the Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant Program to boost domestic production of efficient hybrid, plug-in electric hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.
