Kari Lake Pledges to Fight Federal Abortion Ban

111

TL/DR –

Kari Lake, a Republican U.S. Senate candidate, has been vocal about her anti-abortion stance, previously voicing support for the Texas heartbeat bill and calling abortion “the ultimate sin”. However, after the Arizona Supreme Court reinstated an 1864 abortion ban, Lake urged Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs and the Republican-run Legislature to repeal it. As of November 5, Lake has shifted her stance, stating that she will not support a federal ban on abortion and trusts voters to decide the law.

Kari Lake Changes Abortion Stance

Republican Senate hopeful Kari Lake recently shifted her stance on abortion, stating she trusts Arizona voters to decide on its legality. This statement contradicts her long-held, anti-abortion position.

In a recent social media post, Lake dismissed Ruben Gallego’s claims that she wants to outlaw abortion, stating that she wants voters to hear her position directly.

Historically, Lake has strongly opposed abortion. In September 2021, she pledged to sign the Texas heartbeat bill if elected governor, which would effectively ban abortion at six weeks. In May 2022, Lake labeled abortion as the “ultimate sin.”

Lake’s Changing Position on Abortion

In a February 2022 Republican gubernatorial candidate forum, Lake expressed optimism about the U.S. Supreme Court’s pending ruling on Roe v. Wade, implying that the court might support their anti-abortion stance.

However, in April 2024, when the Arizona Supreme Court reinstated a 1864 abortion ban, Lake urged Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs and the Republican-run Legislature to repeal the ban.

Every poll on the Arizona Abortion Access Act, Proposition 139, shows that it will likely pass on Nov. 5. Therefore, Lake has shifted her stance on abortion, stating she won’t support a federal ban on abortion nor use tax dollars to fund abortions.

Political Opportunism?

This sudden shift in Lake’s stance raises questions about whether she’s adjusting her beliefs to win votes. Despite her previous assertion that “the most vital role our Elected Officials have is protecting our most vulnerable,” she now seems to be prioritizing her political ambitions over her previously held beliefs.
