Iowa Lawmaker Proposes to Buy Nine Southern-most Minnesota Counties
TL/DR –
State Senator Mike Bousselot from Iowa has proposed that the state buy nine of Minnesota’s southern-most counties, arguing it would improve quality of life for residents through lower taxes and regulations. The nine counties in question – Rock, Nobles, Jackson, Martin, Faribault, Freeborn, Mower, Fillmore, and Houston – were originally part of the Iowa Territory. Bousselot has not announced any potential purchase plan and Governor Kim Reynolds did not mention his idea in her State Address.
Iowa State Senator Mike Bousselot proposes purchasing southern-most Minnesota counties to improve quality of life via lower taxes and regulations. This ambitious concept, reminiscent of Trump’s aspiration to buy Greenland, proposes that Iowa acquire Rock, Nobles, Jackson, Martin, Faribault, Freeborn, Mower, Fillmore, and Houston counties. Bousselot argues these counties, originally part of the Iowa Territory, would benefit due to Iowa’s substantial reserves compared to Minnesota’s fiscal challenges.
Bousselot’s plan does not yet have a proposed price for the Minnesota properties, and he chooses to avoid public negotiation. Iowa’s Governor Kim Reynolds has not commented on this controversial proposal.
