Letter: Safeguard investments in clean energy
TL/DR –
The Inflation Reduction Act has bolstered Maine’s clean energy sector and benefitted working families by creating jobs and reducing energy costs, according to a union ironworker in Bangor. Federal tax credits enabled by the Act have led to many new clean energy projects across the state, requiring skilled union labor. However, concerns are raised about potential rollbacks of federal incentives like the Inflation Reduction Act, which could result in job losses and higher energy bills, hence the call for protection of these incentives.
Union Ironworker Speaks on the Benefit of Federal Clean Energy Incentives
As a union ironworker in Bangor, I am a witness to the positive impact of federal clean energy incentives like the Inflation Reduction Act on Maine’s working families. The rising energy costs and scarcity of good jobs requiring no college degree are real challenges. However, the solution seems clear: a robust local clean energy industry that provides good-paying jobs and aids in reducing energy costs.
The Inflation Reduction Act’s federal tax credits have stimulated the rise of various clean energy projects across our state. These projects, aimed at refining our energy infrastructure, demand a highly skilled union workforce, and Mainers are ready to meet this need. It’s crucial to find a way to offer better wages and benefits to our working people, enabling them to cater for their families.
Much more can be accomplished in clean energy projects, focusing on solar and wind, given adequate funding. The state of Maine has already benefited from billions of dollars in investments and a significant increase in the clean energy we produce, provided our elected leaders continue to support the IRA.
However, if Congress reverses federal incentives like the IRA, the consequences will be fewer jobs and escalated energy bills.
Thus, I implore Sen. Susan Collins and Rep. Jared Golden to stand with Maine families and safeguard the Inflation Reduction Act. It’s imperative to fight for these federal incentives that significantly impact our communities.
It’s time to ensure Maine’s energy future remains affordable, reliable and locally produced.
