News Article: Political Violence and the ‘Civil War’ Online Discourse

Published On: By: Joe Scarborough

An abridged excerpt from Sept. 15 episode of “Morning Joe” explores the rampant online discourse about a potential “civil war” in America following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Notably, Elon Musk’s controversial comments on X, suggesting that “the Left is the party of murder” and inciting to fight or die, have sparked much debate.

The rise in political violence isn’t new. Despite previous assassination attempts on Donald Trump, there was no call for civil war when Democratic politicians were victims of similar attacks. Clearly, such indifference towards violence on ‘the other side’ is unsettling.

The divisive rhetoric does not truly represent America at large. Post-tragedy, many Americans express horror and hopelessness, asking, “When will this end?”

We, as a nation, need to unite and question the path we’ve taken. How did we get to a point where politicians can’t carry out their duties without fear of being assassinated?

Our leaders, the media, and everyone must strive for better. While engaging in forceful debates is necessary, it should never escalate to violence.

Should violence occur, we must collectively condemn it, regardless of where it happens.
