Chris Wright Discusses Impact of Government Shutdown on Nuclear Modernization
Energy Secretary Chris Wright features in ‘The Sunday Briefing’ to address how the ongoing government shutdown is affecting nuclear modernization, testing plans, AI-driven energy demand, and efforts to enhance the power capacity of the U.S.
Wright Criticizes Democrats Over Government Shutdown
During the discussion, Wright expressed his frustration towards the Democrats, criticizing them for the prolonged government shutdown, which has led to the furlough of nuclear weapons contractors under the Trump administration.
Wright accentuated his concerns, stating, “It’s deeply irresponsible to see the Democrats run this more than a month now, and unfortunately, we ran out of budget gymnastics we could play, and we have to start furloughing workers who are developing our next-generation nuclear weapons and nuclear stockpile.”
Effects of the Shutdown on Nuclear Modernization
Despite the challenging circumstances, Wright reassured the public that the current nuclear arsenal remains secure. However, he cautioned that the ongoing furloughs are stalling progress on critical modernization programs aimed at maintaining U.S. dominance. “If the government doesn’t reopen soon, bigger ramifications could be on the horizon,” warns Wright.
Wright’s comments followed Trump’s recent announcement about plans to recommence nuclear weapons testing to maintain parity with global nuclear programs. While no nuclear explosions are planned, Wright explained that the majority of these tests will be system tests or “non-critical explosions” that test all other parts of a nuclear weapon, ensuring they deliver the appropriate geometry and set up the correct nuclear explosion.
