Heinrich Applauds Decision Statement

TL/DR –

US Senator Martin Heinrich has criticized President Trump’s tariffs, which he says have increased costs for New Mexico families and small businesses. Heinrich has previously cosponsored the No Tariffs on Groceries Act and the Small Business Liberation Act, aimed at preventing tariff increases and exempting small businesses from global baseline tariffs respectively. Heinrich also voted for a bill to extend ACA tax credits for three years to protect New Mexicans from rising healthcare costs, and has criticized the Trump administration’s approach to energy costs, securing funding for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to lower utility costs.

Martin Heinrich Stands Up Against Trump’s Tariffs and Fights for Lower Costs for New Mexicans

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) has expressed his disapproval following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision striking down many of President Trump’s sweeping tariff taxes. Heinrich stressed that these tariffs have resulted in elevated costs for New Mexico working families, small businesses, and entrepreneurs.

“Trump’s illegal tariffs have driven up the price of groceries and everyday necessities for New Mexico families and small businesses. The Supreme Court’s decision today upholds the law, but it doesn’t undo the damage these tariffs have already inflicted,” said Heinrich. “And now, instead of correcting course, Trump is already launching new tariffs, proving once again that he and his administration don’t care about lowering costs for everyday Americans. But I know working families can’t afford Trump’s illegal tariffs, and I won’t stop fighting to lower costs for New Mexicans.”

Heinrich’s Efforts to Alleviate Tariff Impacts on New Mexicans

Senator Heinrich has been proactive in his attempts to mitigate the impact of tariffs on the cost of groceries and other daily essentials for New Mexicans. He co-sponsored the No Tariffs on Groceries Act, aimed at preventing President Trump from enforcing tariffs that would increase grocery prices for New Mexico families.

Last February, Heinrich publicly opposed President Trump’s tariffs, highlighting their adverse effects on families and job loss. He also co-sponsored Senator Ed Markey’s (D-Mass.) Small Business Liberation Act, aimed at exempting small businesses from global baseline and reciprocal tariffs, and providing refunds to the small businesses that had to pay them.

Heinrich’s Commitment to Lowering Health and Energy Costs

In addition to his work against tariffs, Heinrich has also focused on lowering health care and energy costs for New Mexicans. Last December, he joined Senate Democrats to introduce the Lower Health Care Costs Act aimed at extending the enhanced premium ACA tax credits for three years and protecting New Mexicans from rising health care costs.

Heinrich is also committed to tackling high energy costs for New Mexicans. In December, he secured crucial funding for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to decrease utility costs and heating bills for families in New Mexico this winter. He also released a fact sheet outlining how President Trump’s actions have affected the energy sector and increased costs for families nationwide.
