Lyft Unveils Gas Savings Plan for US Drivers Amid Rising Fuel Costs
Fox News contributor Liz Peek expects the recent upsurge in gas prices due to Iran conflict to be a short-term issue.
To alleviate the impact of escalating gas prices on earnings, Lyft is introducing a temporary relief plan for its US drivers.
Lyft’s Temporary Relief Plan Explained
The company’s new initiative kicks off on March 27 and will continue until May 26. The program allows drivers to earn cash back and save on fuel by using a Lyft Direct debit card at selected gas stations nationwide.
Lyft observed that gas prices have soared significantly lately, affecting drivers who rely on driving for their income. “We understand that financial relief is crucial during such periods,” said Lyft in a statement.
Program Benefits for Lyft Drivers
Under this scheme, top-tier drivers receive an additional 2% cash back on fuel purchases. Meanwhile, mid-tier drivers can earn an extra 1%. These benefits are in addition to existing rewards, which can total up to 10% depending on the driver’s status.
Drivers also have an opportunity to save an extra 14 cents per gallon through Lyft’s partnership with the Upside app. They can redeem points for further discounts, which could lead to significant savings.
Lyft estimates total savings could reach as much as 98 cents per gallon for its highest-performing drivers considering the current average US gas prices of $3.97.
Rising Gas Prices and Its Impact on Drivers
As of Wednesday, AAA reported that gas prices were approximately $3.98 per gallon.
Yuko Yamazaki, Vice President, and Head of Driver at Lyft, expressed that rising gas prices are impacting drivers’ earnings. She added that when costs surge, Lyft wants drivers to choose their platform as it works for them, not against them.
Global energy disruptions related to the conflict involving Iran have driven gas prices up by more than 30% in recent weeks, according to Reuters.
Other Companies Providing Fuel Cost Relief
Following Lyft’s announcement, DoorDash also unveiled a similar program earlier this week. Their scheme, which runs till April 26, combines cash-back incentives with weekly payments to help offset fuel costs for active Dashers.
