Vacaville Finalizes Energy Project

TL/DR –

The city of Vacaville has completed a Sustainable Energy Project in collaboration with OPTERRA Energy Services, installing solar panels at eight city facilities and offsetting approximately 2,118 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. The project, which was funded through a tax-exempt lease purchase agreement with no initial capital investment from the city, will be paid off through energy cost savings over time. Vacaville Unveils Completed Sustainable Energy Project in Partnership with OPTERRA Energy Services

The city of Vacaville revealed on Thursday that its extensive Sustainable Energy Project, undertaken with OPTERRA Energy Services, has been completed. The project was financed through a tax-exempt lease purchase agreement, meaning the city did not need to provide any upfront capital investment. Furthermore, the expenses will be completely balanced by energy savings over time.

Additional funding for the project was provided by the federal government, with $5.4 million secured through the Inflation Reduction Act. A production guarantee was also included to assure that a minimum of 90% of the projected energy output is met each year across eight public sites where upgrades have been carried out.

Solar Panel Installations across the City

The project involved setting up solar panels at eight key city facilities. These include city hall, Andrews Park, and the Ulatis Community Center. The enhancements made as part of this project are expected to offset about 2,118 Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide annually.

The city was also able to lock in long-term savings by securing favorable NEM 2.0 rates before the PG&E Net Energy Metering (NEM 2.0) rates sunset deadline.

Expected Savings and Community Benefits

Over the next 25 years, the project is predicted to bring significant savings to the city. It will also provide a safeguard against increasing utility costs. In addition, 320 trees were planted in the community as an integral part of the project.

The Mayor of Vacaville, John Carli, expressed his pride in the completion of the energy project. He said, “This project is a significant step forward in Vacaville’s pledge to a sustainable energy future. It not only helps us meet our General Plan objectives but also allows city departments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with state regulations. This contributes to making our city greener and more resilient. I am delighted to see the positive impact of this project on all parts of the city, including traditionally under-served areas and broad community spaces.”

Additional Contributions from OPTERRA Energy Services and Future Prospects

OPTERRA Energy Services also donated $15,000 to a downtown mural project and facilitated workforce development through Solano Community College. Courtney Jenkins, CEO of OPTERRA Energy Services, said, “Vacaville’s Sustainable Energy Project is a perfect example of how growing cities can modernize their infrastructure, improve resilience, and invest in their communities without adding financial stress. We are proud to collaborate with this exceptional community to deliver a program that realizes energy savings targets and offers substantial opportunities for workforce development and environmental stewardship.”
