Barack and Michelle Obama Surprise Visitors at New Presidential Center

In a surprising event, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama greeted the first 100 visitors at the new Obama Presidential Center.

Joined by LeVar Burton, former “Reading Rainbow” host, the Obamas engaged in a reading session with 25 school children from a Chicago Public Library branch inside the center. They read “Where the Wild Things Are”, with Michelle Obama humorously interjecting during Maurice Sendak’s line about being “king of all wild things”.

Guests were awed, shaking hands with the Obamas against a stunning 38-foot-tall painting depicting a map of Chicago, inspired by a 1914 Carl Sandburg’s poem about the city: “stormy, husky, brawling, City of the Big Shoulders.”

The Juneteenth inauguration was marked by a grand dedication ceremony featuring the Obamas, former presidents, celebrities, musicians, athletes, and politicians. A series of events are set for the sprawling campus located on Chicago’s South Side, close to where the Obamas started their political journey.

Tickets for the public are sold out till end of November. The lucky ones who managed to get tickets for the first day had the rare opportunity of meeting the Obamas.

The campus includes a towering museum illustrating the political and personal lives of America’s first Black president and first lady. Public spaces include a library branch, athletic center, playground, basketball courts, and a picnic area. The tower’s design symbolizes unity with excerpts from Obama’s 2015 speech at the 50th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery march, commencing with “You are America.”
