Biddeford Shooting Involving U.S. ICE Agents Causes Alarm
A fatal shooting took place in Biddeford, involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, as revealed by Maine House Speaker, Ryan Fecteau.
The shooting occurred near Pool Street early Monday morning. Fecteau stated that the Maine State Police are currently on the scene and he expects the FBI to take over the investigation.
Gov. Janet Mills, upon being briefed about the incident, assured that the Maine State Police along with the Attorney General’s Office, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and Federal officials are working together to find out what happened.
According to a Biddeford Gazette report, a witness heard four shots after two officers surrounded a white sedan with weapons drawn.
The victim, not yet officially identified, is believed to be a 26-year-old Colombian who had a work permit in the U.S. – stated jointly by Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente! Maine.
Several key political figures, including U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and Rep. Chellie Pingree, have called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
Community members have responded to the event with protests against ICE. Images showing two men wearing ICE vests have been circulating online.
The FBI’s Boston field office responded to the shooting but did not disclose further details. The Maine attorney general’s office declined to comment.
This is the 11th fatal shooting involving ICE or U.S. Border Patrol agents since the second Trump administration. Earlier this year, Maine saw an increase in ICE agents which was followed by nationwide backlash after the fatal shootings of two protesters in Minneapolis.
