Rochester Healthcare Workers Seek New Labor Agreement
In Rochester, N.Y., unions representing hundreds of healthcare and service workers are advocating for a new labor agreement. This comes in anticipation of their contract expiration next week with the University of Rochester. Negotiations commenced last month between the workers and 1199 Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
The labor group is actively negotiating a new deal that emphasizes affordable health insurance, wage enhancements, and initiatives for talent retention and recruitment. Furthermore, retirement benefits, paid time off, and protections for graduate workers form key issues within the discussions.
“If the workers don’t have what they require, the whole institution risks collapse. We ensure all students and patients in the communities are provided with resources for a healthy, fulfilling life,” stated Dawn Marshall-Hosier, the executive vice president of 1199 SEIU local 200.
With the existing contract set to conclude next Saturday, it currently covers over 2,000 workers. Presently, two meetings are scheduled for negotiations before the contract’s end. Further unrest is witnessed as nursing home employees picket over contract disputes.
