Phoenix Sky Harbor Sponsors Annual Airports Going Green Conference

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is sponsoring the annual Airports Going Green (AGG) conference this week. This esteemed gathering serves as the aviation industry’s principal forum on sustainability. The event brings together airlines, airports, industry associations, and government agencies to discuss and share best practices for future sustainability as an industry.

Phoenix Sky Harbor’s New Initiative

Phoenix Sky Harbor made history last year as it became the world’s first airport to offer travelers the ability to use a Waymo autonomous zero-emission vehicle for transportation to and from the airport. Today, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego announced a new sustainability initiative, the Green Curb program.

This program provides a conveniently located pickup area for rideshare riders with unique signage and markings, thus making electric vehicle pickup locations at both terminals easily visible. Over the summer, Uber announced they will offer a 40 percent discount on airport pickup and drop-off fees when customers select Uber’s electric rides.

Phoenix Sky Harbor’s Sustainability Endeavors

Phoenix Sky Harbor is a sustainability leader in the aviation industry. The airport has developed a Roadmap to Net Zero Carbon that outlines short, medium, and long-term strategies to reach its goal of net zero carbon by 2040. This goal signifies an absolute reduction of carbon emissions by at least 90 percent from a 2010 baseline, with a maximum of 10 percent of emissions eliminated through carbon removal technologies.

Since 2010, Phoenix Sky Harbor has already achieved a 34 percent reduction in annual carbon emissions through energy conservation measures and other initiatives, despite ongoing growth and expansion. The airport continues its commitment to reducing environmental impact through collaboration and innovation with airport partners.
