TL/DR –

San Diego’s Mayor Todd Gloria stated the city is preparing for the impact of a storm moving south. This comes after two weeks of repeated storm events, unusual for San Diego, complicating the response and recovery efforts for those already affected by previous flooding. The city is under flood watch, and officials are doing everything they can to prepare, including issuing a second evacuation warning to flood-prone areas and distributing over 150,000 sandbags.

San Diego Mayor Discusses Upcoming Storm Preparation Amidst Recent Flooding

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria spoke on CNN’s Newsroom Monday about preparing for the upcoming storm as it heads south. He highlighted that the city is still recovering from recent storm events experienced over the past two weeks.

“This significant rainfall in San Diego is unusual and challenging our response efforts to aid those already affected by the recent floods,” Gloria said.

The mayor also issued a secondary evacuation alert for flood-prone parts of the city, stating, “We’ve witnessed non-traditional areas flooding due to the high volume of rain in a short period. These atmospheric rivers are now a constant aspect of our lives, dumping an enormous amount of water, particularly on smaller parts of our city, in a brief time.”

Gloria emphasized that efforts are underway to face the storm, including the distribution of over 150,000 sandbags. Despite the preparations, he added, “we could certainly benefit from a break from mother nature.”

San Diego is on flood watch from 4 p.m. local time Monday until 10 a.m. Wednesday. The peak rainfall is anticipated to start around 7 p.m. local time Monday and persist until early Wednesday morning.
