A year following the surrender of his illegal pet by a Maryland-based soldier, Anubis the wolf is flourishing in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, at the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania.
Wolf Rescue Anniversaries: Celebrating Successful Transformations
The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania commemorates the rescue anniversaries for all of its 55 resident canines annually. According to Michelle Mancini, the education director at the center, the one-year transformation of Anubis from a frightened rescue \”dog\” to a content and upbeat wolf is a success story worth celebrating.
“Anubis is thriving,” said Mancini.
The Journey of Anubis: Surrender, Rescue, and Rehabilitation
Anubis arrived at the sanctuary, situated in Lititz, Pennsylvania, trembling in a cage in December 2022. Delivered by Chesapeake Cats & Dogs who convinced his owner to surrender the wolf, Anubis’ transition and progress are impressive.
Kim Ewing, a volunteer from the Queen Anne’s County-based rescue group Chesapeake Cats & Dogs, recalls the case as one of the most peculiar animal welfare instances ever encountered, garnering significant attention on social media.
The Arrival of Anubis at the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania
Anubis, initially described as a “shy and skittish” Alaskan malamute/German Shepherd mix, soon attracted the attention of several discerning Facebook users who identified him as a wolf. This led to further investigations and the eventual realization that Anubis was not a dog, but a wolf.
Wolves and wolf hybrids are prohibited in Maryland and also on United States military bases. Yet, Anubis’ owner was attempting to raise this wolf on Fort Meade. This prompted immediate action, and after a thorough search for suitable sanctuaries, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania agreed to care for Anubis.
Settling In: Anubis’ Time at the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania
As Anubis settled into his new home, sanctuary staff and volunteers would take turns sitting with him, reading bedtime stories to the frightened animal. Over time, Anubis began to feel more comfortable around humans. His bonding with Vulcan, a 5-year-old wolf-dog from Texas, facilitated his transition into the sanctuary’s pack life.
Living the Good Life: Anubis and Vulcan’s New Home
After receiving clean health reports, Vulcan and Anubis were given their own outdoor enclosure at the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania. Here, they have formed an elaborate den, fondly called “the spaceship” due to its appearance.
The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania: Providing a Safe Haven for Rescued Wolves
Established in 1980 as a non-profit, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania offers both public and private tours. The facility is home to numerous rescued wolves like Anubis and Vulcan, providing them with a safe and nurturing environment.
As for Anubis’ previous owner, no disciplinary action was taken following the surrender of his illegal pet. Fort Meade officials, however, did issue an updated memorandum on “Domestic and Stray Animals,” reinforcing the prohibition of owning wolves or wolf-dog hybrids like Anubis.
