AP Unanimously Selects Patrick Mahomes as Top NFL Quarterback Again | AP News
Despite struggling in one of his least impressive games, Kansas City Chiefs’ star player Patrick Mahomes stands tall in the rankings. Known for his stellar NFL performances, Mahomes continues to reign as the No. 1 quarterback according to The Associated Press.
His ranking is determined by a panel of nine AP Pro Football Writers who analyze and rank the top five quarterbacks based on their performance through Week 8. The ranking system assigns 10 points for first-place votes, with decreasing points for subsequent ranks.
Mahomes had also received all nine first-place votes in the preseason poll.
Other NFL quarterbacks like Tua Tagovailoa, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts also received considerable votes. A total of ten quarterbacks were considered in the voting process.
Mahomes, whose leadership has led the Kansas City Chiefs to five straight AFC championship games, had a poor game with the second-lowest passer rating of his career in a 24-9 loss at Denver.
However, Mahomes has still managed to keep the Chiefs (6-2) on top of the AFC West.
1. PATRICK MAHOMES, Kansas City Chiefs:
Mahomes’ contribution to the Chiefs includes 2,258 yards passing, 15 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. His 95.8 passer rating is the lowest of his career, but he remains the go-to guy for the Chiefs this season.
2. TUA TAGOVAILOA, Miami Dolphins:
Tua Tagovailoa, finishing just one point ahead of Allen, takes the No. 2 spot. He leads the NFL with a 108.8 passer rating and 2,416 yards. Thanks to Tagovailoa’s command of the offense, the Dolphins (6-2) are atop the AFC East.
3. JOSH ALLEN, Buffalo Bills:
Despite some criticism, Allen holds his ground at No. 3. He leads the NFL in completion percentage with 71.7% and is second in the league with 17 TD passes.
4. LAMAR JACKSON, BALTIMORE RAVENS:
Lamar Jackson, stepping up to the spot held by Aaron Rodgers in the preseason poll, has witnessed a return to his 2019 NFL MVP form, leading the Ravens (6-2) to the forefront of the AFC North.
5. JALEN HURTS, Philadelphia Eagles:
Despite a fluctuating performance this season, Hurts has thrown for 2,140 yards and 13 TDs and has been a significant asset to the Eagles (7-1), the team with the best record in the NFL.
