The Importance of Quality Nursing Home Care
Quality care in nursing homes is crucial for over 1.4 million residents nationwide. Most of these individuals, at least 65 years old, depend on long-term care due to chronic conditions like arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, or Alzheimer’s disease. This critical demographic data was shared by Dr. Michael Tehrani, founder and CEO of MedWell Medical.
National Staffing Levels in Nursing Homes
The latest findings indicate that fewer than 5% of the evaluated nursing homes meet both current and proposed staffing requirements. Over 400 nursing homes reportedly failed to have a registered nurse available for at least eight hours a day, seven days a week, as required by federal regulations. These staffing levels directly impact the quality of care provided, with nursing homes meeting both staffing standards 54 times more likely to be rated a “Best Nursing Home”.
Evaluation Methodology
The U.S. News & World Report evaluates nursing homes based on numerous quality measures provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). These measures encompass data on resident care, safety, outcomes, and other quality indicators. Nursing homes receiving high ratings from CMS are often recognized as top performers by U.S. News, indicating a consistent delivery of high-quality care.
