The 35th anniversary edition of Blue Ridge Country magazine features the Best of the Mountains reader poll, where readers voted on their favorite destinations in seven states covered by the publication. From retirement towns to revitalized downtowns, discover the top picks in the Southern Appalachian region.

Hendersonville and Asheville Earn Top Spots

In the reader poll, Hendersonville earned two first-place spots, while its neighbor to the North, Asheville, ended up with 11. Hendersonville took home the title for Best Retirement Town and Best Revitalized Downtown, while Asheville stood out in categories such as Best Arts Town, Best Foodie Town, and Best River Town.

Runner-Up Awards and Additional Categories

Hendersonville also secured two runner-up positions for Friendliest Town and Best Fall Festival for the North Carolina Apple Festival. Asheville’s additional first-place awards include Best Historic Attraction (Biltmore Estate), Best Spa (the space at Omni Grove Park Inn), and Best Luxury Resort (Omni Grove Park Inn).

Biennial Reader Polls and 35th Anniversary Magazine

Blue Ridge Country magazine conducts reader polls every five years, and the latest edition for July/August 2023 will feature the complete results. According to a news release, the 35th anniversary magazine will hit newsstands in mid-June, providing valuable insights and travel ideas for the Southern Appalachian region.

Readers submitted their votes online over the course of two months, resulting in more than 130 first-, second-, and third-place awards in various categories. These awards highlight the best cities, towns, attractions, and activities from the mountains of Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia.
