Labour leader Andy Burnham has incorporated three members from the Socialist Campaign Group, Labour’s far-left division, into his government for the first time. The newly appointed chief whip, Anneliese Midgley, has assured MPs of a reinforced role for parliamentary private secretaries (PPSs).
Burnham has pledged to curb Labour’s factionalism and make balanced appointments from both left and centrist wings of the party. Despite returning several soft-left ministers to cabinet key positions, there were initially no appointments from the Socialist Campaign Group.
However, Burnham has now appointed three parliamentary private secretaries from the socialist caucus. Olivia Blake MP for Sheffield Hallam will serve as PPS for local government, Mary Kelly Foy of City of Durham will be at housing, and Steve Witherden of Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr will be at energy.
Midgley confirmed that all new appointments were made in consultation with cabinet ministers. She stated that, in addition to managing government-backbencher liaison, PPSs will also have increased opportunities to engage with media and handle national policy issues.
Burnham assigned the position of his own PPS to veteran MP Sir Nic Dakin and appointed local allies Jo Platt and David Baines as his second and third PPS. However, this new reshuffle has stirred discontent among some MPs due to the dismissal of several new MPs, including Abena Oppong-Asare, Starmer’s former PPS.
Tulip Siddiq, the former minister, expressed her frustration saying, “It’s been extremely frustrating to see so many competent people unceremoniously sacked from government.”
