President Biden Supports California Wildfires Response Efforts

LOS ANGELES – Governor Gavin Newsom expressed gratitude today to the Biden-Harris administration for its quick assistance in combating the extraordinary Los Angeles wildfires. The governor earlier met with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Deanne Criswell in LA after President Biden’s afternoon briefing about the fires.

On the previous day in Santa Monica, both Newsom and Biden were updated by state and local emergency officials about the Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst fires. Shortly after, President Biden promptly responded to Governor Newsom’s request for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration to bolster ongoing wildfire response initiatives. Governor Newsom’s appeal for increased federal aid was granted today as Biden authorized covering California’s full fire management and debris cleanup costs for 180 days, a significant increase from the usual 75%.

This declaration will permit federal funding to assist state, tribal, and local governments with emergency response expenditures. It also encompasses Individual Assistance programs for impacted citizens and businesses. These programs may provide temporary housing and financial aid for property damage. Californians can now apply for this federal aid at disasterassistance.gov.
