Biden Accuses Xi Jinping of Being a Dictator

The Chinese government responded to comments by President Biden about Chinese leader Xi Jinping, calling them an “open political provocation.” Speaking at a fundraiser in California, Biden said that Xi had been angered over an incident in February when a Chinese balloon that Washington claims was used for spying flew over the United States before American military jets shot it down. The background of the rivalry between China and the United States turned into a full-blown diplomatic crisis with the February balloon incident. Russia also criticized Biden’s comments, with the Kremlin saying that the comment reflected Washington’s “unpredictable” foreign policy.

China Criticizes Biden’s “Ridiculous” Comments

Beijing’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said, “The relevant remarks by the U.S. side are extremely ridiculous and irresponsible, they seriously violate basic facts, diplomatic protocol, and China’s political dignity.” China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposed to this. Mao reiterated the protest against the United States’ decision to shoot the balloon down, saying that Washington should have dealt with it calmly, rationally, and professionally. Still, instead, its distortion of facts, abuse of force, and escalation of hype have fully exposed its hegemonic and bullying nature.

Background and Russia’s Stance

Russia and China have voiced stronger and stronger solidarity with each other since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s top diplomat effused on a visit to Beijing just a month after the invasion began that together, the two nations would push for a new “multipolar, just, democratic world order.” Meanwhile, Biden says that he wants to have a relationship with Xi Jinping again; however, it is going to take time.

The United States’ Diplomatic Stance with China

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded a visit to Beijing aimed at re-establishing lines of communication to avoid conflict between the two global powers. The four countries, Australia, India, Japan, and the United States, are working hand in glove in the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean to boost peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific maritime region. What Xi Jinping was really upset about was that Biden insisted that they unite the… so-called Quad. Biden is running for reelection next year.
