TL/DR –

Republican Mark Robinson, who is a gubernatorial candidate, has been reported to have made controversial comments on a pornography message board between 2008 and 2012. In these comments, he allegedly referred to himself as a “black NAZI”, expressed support for slavery, and appeared to express regret at not being able to join the Ku Klux Klan. Despite this controversy, Dan Bishop, the Republican nominee for North Carolina Attorney General, has maintained his support and endorsement of Robinson, suggesting that the revelations about Robinson’s posts are a ploy by Democrats and the media.

The Republican nominee for attorney general, Bishop, continues to back embattled gubernatorial candidate, Robinson, despite controversial past statements.

Despite CNN’s report revealing Republican Mark Robinson’s controversial comments on a pornography forum, many North Carolina Republicans are distancing themselves from Robinson. However, Dan Bishop, the Republican nominee for North Carolina Attorney General, remains a staunch supporter.

Bishop has consistently praised Robinson, blaming Democrats and the media for the controversy surrounding Robinson’s past statements.

CNN reported that Robinson made a series of graphic comments on an adult message board, including posts where he called himself a “black NAZI!,” expressed support for slavery, and seemed to lament being unable to join the Ku Klux Klan. Bishop’s positive remarks about Robinson came after a series of controversial positions and statements by Robinson.

Bishop, speaking at a Trump rally, inaccurately implicated hacking in the revelation of Robinson’s porn site posts. He uses the controversy to attack Democrats, accusing them of a coordinated character assassination to smear all Republican candidates.

On a Monday post on X, formerly Twitter, Bishop evaded direct comments on the reporting surrounding Robinson. He instead insists his focus is on winning the Attorney General’s race.

Bishop continues to endorse Robinson, North Carolina’s current lieutenant governor, despite the controversy. The Washington Post reported that the account on the pornography forum linked to Robinson praised Mein Kampf, and rejected offers of IT help to investigate the posts.

Robinson continues to deny the allegations, announcing recently that he hired a law firm to investigate the CNN story.

Bishop’s early support for Robinson’s campaign

Bishop was an early supporter of Robinson, posting his endorsement video of Robinson on Facebook shortly after the campaign launch. Bishop described Robinson as “groundbreaking” and the most formidable candidate he’d ever seen in North Carolina.

Bishop’s vision of Robinson’s “new majority”

Bishop, in his campaign to be North Carolina’s next attorney general, expressed his wish to be part of Robinson’s new majority. The two share similar policy views, particularly on abortion and LGBTQ rights. Robinson has a history of attacking LGBTQ individuals and supports a total abortion ban.

For instance, Robinson refers to transgender people as “demonic,” while Bishop authored North Carolina’s House Bill 2 in 2016, legislation that discriminated against transgender residents, costing the state job opportunities and billions in revenue.

Both Robinson and Bishop have also been in agreement on abortion rights. On the day Roe v. Wade was overturned, Bishop celebrated the ruling in a press release. Despite Robinson paying for his now-wife to have an abortion in 1989, he has also made opposing abortion a key part of his platform.

Despite major backlash, Bishop continues to stand by his endorsement of Robinson.
