Centrist third-party in US formally complains about election ‘conspiracy’ | US Politics
TL/DR –
The centrist group No Labels has formally requested the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate an alleged unlawful conspiracy against its efforts to secure ballot access for the 2024 presidential election. The group has accused opponents of violating federal law, including racketeering and a number of criminal civil rights provisions, citing harassment and intimidation against its representatives, donors, and potential candidates. No Labels, which is considering running a third party candidate against President Joe Biden and the expected Republican nominee, Donald Trump, is currently on the ballot in 14 states and will decide in March whether to offer a presidential ticket.
US Centrist Group, No Labels, Files Complaint Over Alleged Conspiracy to Derail Their 2024 Presidential Election Bid
The centrist organization, No Labels, has lodged an official complaint with the Justice Department. The complaint revolves around an “alleged unlawful conspiracy” to hamper their 2024 Presidential ballot access.
No Labels is yet to conclude whether to run a third party candidate against expected nominees Joe Biden and Donald Trump in the November election. Critics argue that such an effort would inadvertently disadvantage Biden and benefit Trump.
Last week, No Labels dispatched an eight-page complaint to the Justice Department. The document accuses opponents of transgressing federal law, including instances of racketeering and numerous criminal civil rights provisions.
“A group of activists, operatives, and party officials are purportedly participating in an illegal conspiracy. They’re using intimidation, harassment, and fear against No Labels’ representatives, its donors, and its potential candidates,” stated Dan Webb, a leader of No Labels, during a press conference last Thursday.
The letter points to instances such as a Semafor report on a call organized by Matt Bennett, co-founder of thinktank Third Way, and threats allegedly made to No Labels co-founder, Holly Page, by a representative of the Lincoln Project.
Benjamin Chavis Jr, a No Labels national co-chair and civil rights activist, argued that this conspiracy is a blatant voter suppression attempt.
Buoyed by deep voter dissatisfaction with Biden and Trump, desire for a third-party presidential candidate has surged. A December Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated six in 10 respondents wanted a third choice due to dissatisfaction with the two-party system.
Founded in 2009, No Labels is on the ballot in 14 states and is set to decide in March whether to introduce its ballot line to a unity presidential ticket. In contrast, The Lincoln Project has rebuffed No Labels’ legal complaint, alleging that No Labels is a dark money group whose power quest risks electing Trump.
