TL/DR –

Negotiators have reached a coalition agreement for a new Flanders government, which aims to enhance the education, health, and living affordability in the region. The agreement was reached following a 17-hour negotiation that stalled on disagreements over the budget, use of headscarves in public services and classrooms, reduction of MPs, the reintroduction of mandatory voting, and the abolition of the five provinces in Flanders. The distribution of ministerial portfolios is expected by the end of next week.

The negotiators are ready to present a fresh coalition agreement to their parties in the near future.

“A new, improved, more social Flanders government is in place with promising developments in education, healthcare, and affordable living,” stated Vooruit leader, Conner Rousseau, on Instagram.

The discussions stalled Thursday, following a 17-hour debate over budget issues, headscarves in public services and classrooms, shrinking the Flemish parliament, reinstating compulsory voting and eliminating the five provinces in Flanders.

Expected next week: allocation of ministerial portfolios.
