Delhi Minister Atishi to Take Over as Chief Minister After Kejriwal Resigns
TL/DR –
Delhi minister Atishi has been named as the new Chief Minister of India’s national capital territory following the resignation of incumbent Arvind Kejriwal, according to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Atishi, who is a prominent member of the AAP and has held several portfolios within the city government, will lead Delhi until the forthcoming elections. This development follows Kejriwal’s release from prison on bail in a corruption case, his resignation announcement, and his intention to ask the public to decide whether he is honest or a criminal.
Aam Aadmi Party Announces New Delhi Chief Minister
In a recent meeting with AAP legislators, party leader Arvind Kejriwal announces Delhi minister Atishi as the new Chief Minister of India’s capital, Delhi.
Following the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi minister Atishi is set to assume the position of Chief Minister in India’s national capital, as per the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announcement.
Known for holding multiple city government portfolios, Atishi, 43, is a leading member of the AAP which emerged as a significant political force over the last decade.
“Atishi is to steer Delhi until the next elections, embodying both the vision of former CM Arvind Kejriwal and the capital’s future,” stated the AAP.
Earlier, Kejriwal, 56, announced his resignation as chief minister after his release on bail over a corruption case. The AAP has called his arrest a “political conspiracy” designed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The former anti-corruption activist, who served as Delhi’s chief minister since 2015, is a key Modi critic and AAP is a part of the Congress-led INDIA alliance.
Last week, the Supreme Court granted Kejriwal bail, following his six-month detention over alleged anomalies in Delhi’s liquor policy.
Addressing reporters, Atishi, the interim chief minister until the state legislative assembly elections in February, stated her objective is to bring Kejriwal back as Delhi’s chief minister.
Expressing gratitude towards Kejriwal, Atishi said, “He trusted me, made me a legislator, a minister, and today, handed over the chief minister’s responsibilities to me.”
