As tech visionary Elon Musk’s influence in Washington has grown recently, his popularity has declined, according to a poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

U.S. adults’ favorable view of Musk dropped from 41 percent in December to 33 percent. Musk’s downsizing and remodeling of the federal government as part of President Donald Trump’s administration has drawn substantial criticism.

The poll revealed approximately two-thirds of adults feel Musk’s influence on federal government is excessive. The billionaire is expected to exit his administration role in the coming weeks, and dedicate more time to his electric automaker, Tesla.

Musk’s downsizing approach, championed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), his creation, has resulted in the firing of federal employees and halted agency activities. However, Musk’s ambitious downsizing goals seem to be challenging to achieve. His focus, hereafter, is expected to be on Tesla that witnessed dwindling revenue during his political tenure.

The AP-NORC poll sampled 1,260 adults from April 17-21, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
