EU to Convene Over Trump’s Tariff Threats Linked to Greenland Purchase

The European Union will convene an emergency ambassadorial meeting in Brussels this Sunday in response to President Donald Trump’s tariff threats on eight member nations aimed at facilitating a Greenland purchase for the U.S., a Cyprus E.U. Council spokesperson confirmed.

Disapproval of Trump’s tariff threats and his interest in acquiring the Danish territory was voiced by European Parliament members and American legislators alike.

A joint statement from leaders in Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK, warned of a potential “dangerous downward spiral” in transatlantic relations due to the proposed tariffs. They affirmed their commitment to preserving their sovereignty.

European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola of Malta, criticized the tariffs on X, stating they risk emboldening adversaries and undermining shared democratic values.

Metsola stressed that Greenland’s sovereignty must be respected and that tariff threats won’t alter this fact.

Vice President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas of Estonia, suggested China and Russia could benefit from divisions among allies resulting from Trump’s announcement.

On her X post, Kallas warned against tariffs potentially undermining shared prosperity between Europe and the U.S.

Several European political figures have expressed intentions to delay the final approval of last summer’s partially implemented E.U.-U.S. trade deal until it gets through the European Parliament.

European Parliament’s international trade committee chief, Bernd Lange, criticized the tariffs on X and called for suspending the trade deal’s implementation until the U.S. ceases its threats.

Manfred Weber, head of the European People’s Party, tweeted on X his disapproval and called for a halt on the 0% tariffs on U.S. products.

Several U.S. lawmakers, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., have criticized Trump’s tariff plan and vowed to introduce legislation to block it.
