During the McCain Institute’s virtual event on July 23, Alexander spoke about his latest book, “The Education of a Senator: From JFK to Trump,” published in May this year. Alexander stressed the importance of purposeful leadership, terming it his guiding principle throughout his career.

“Having a clear sense of purpose is the way to navigate this digital democracy and weather the challenges associated with public life. If there’s a genuine cause—be it assisting Ukraine, battling cancer, addressing HIV/AIDS, or reforming immigration—difficulties lose their sting,” Alexander said.

Alexander’s Book on American Politics

In his book, Alexander provides an insider perspective on six decades of American politics, illuminating his collaborations with politicians from different political backgrounds.

Reflecting on the values of the McCain Institute and the leadership of the late Sen. John McCain, Alexander underscored the significance of character and temperament in public life at the event.

“After working with 10 presidents over nearly six decades, my conclusion is that the most critical traits for a president, or anyone in public service, are character and temperament. After that, they can lean left or right,” he said.

Promoting Public Service

Alexander, recognized for his work in healthcare, education and national parks legislation, penned his book targeting those contemplating a public service career.

“I wrote my book to persuade and hopefully inspire them to pursue public service, emphasizing how being elected or working for someone elected is the surest way to help the most people and sustain our republic. While private life offers opportunities for good, some tasks necessitate public service,” he said.
