TL/DR –
Brigitte Macron, the French First Lady, has faced backlash after a video surfaced of her using a sexist slur against feminist activists who protested at a show by actor-comedian Ary Abittan, previously accused of rape. The activists were part of the feminist campaign group “Nous Toutes,” which disrupted Abittan’s show to protest the culture of sexual violence impunity in France. Macron’s team explained her remarks as a criticism of the activists’ “radical method” of protest, but opposition figures and activists have demanded an apology.

Brigitte Macron is facing backlash for her derogatory comment made against feminist group “Nous Toutes” who protested at the show of an actor-comedian previously accused of rape. Macron’s team clarified that her comment was targeted towards the group’s “radical method” of protest.
Video Captures Macron’s Controversial Remark
The video, released by Public, shows Brigitte Macron backstage at the Folies Bergère theatre in Paris discussing with actor Ary Abittan. Feminist campaigners had disrupted his prior show, labeling him a “rapist”. Despite being accused of rape in 2021, investigators dropped the case due to lack of evidence in 2023.
In the video, Macron is heard responding to a nervous Abittan, with a crass comment in French, “If there are any stupid bitches, we’ll kick them out”.
Feminists Respond with Social Media Campaign
“Nous Toutes”, in a stand against sexual violence in France, have turned Macron’s insult into a hashtag, #sallesconnes, which is being widely shared. Judith Godreche, an actor and feminist icon since accusing two directors of sexual abuse showed solidarity on Instagram stating, “We too are stupid bitches”.
An activist from the group expressed shock at Macron’s language, claiming it as an insult to victims and feminist groups.
France has recently been shaken by various rape and sexual assault accusations against prominent cultural figures. One such figure is film star Gerard Depardieu, who was convicted for sexual assault in May. Depardieu denies the allegations.
However, President Emmanuel Macron had supported Depardieu in 2023, standing behind the presumption of innocence amid the accusations.
Calls for Apology After Macron’s Slur
Macron’s sexist remark has prompted left-wing critics and former French President François Hollande to call for an apology. On the other hand, National Rally lawmaker Jean-Philippe Tanguy defended Macron, expressing that her comments were private and stolen.
