George Clooney Receives Prestigious Chaplin Award, Speaks on Political Climate

George Clooney was celebrated with Film at Lincoln Center’s Chaplin Award, recognizing his acclaimed career as an actor, writer, and director.

Recently, Clooney has been recognized for his political views as much as for his work behind and in front of the camera.

Accepting the Chaplin Award in New York Monday, following the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting, Clooney discussed recent political events.

“We can’t ignore the world’s happenings,” he said, disagreeing with the current administration but emphasizing no room for violence as seen in Washington, D.C., and Minnesota.

Being an outspoken Donald Trump critic, Clooney didn’t mention the president by name and instead spoke against “hatred” and “cruelty.”

He highlighted a need for a struggle against hatred, corruption, and violence, calling it a fight for the republic’s soul.

Invoking Trump’s “make America great again” slogan, Clooney called for unity and a strive towards a better future.

“As citizens, we can build a more perfect union, heal our wounds and truly make America great again,” he added.

Clooney also quoted journalist Edward R. Murrow, whose words, he said, seem “urgent” today.

“We will not walk in fear, one of another,” Clooney stressed, emphasizing the importance of freedom and courage.

Stephen Colbert, who also honored Clooney, made a jest about Good Night, and Good Luck, a film written and directed by Clooney.

“This inspiring film has now been seen by millions, and hopefully someday by CBS,” Colbert said.
