TL/DR –

In the new federal government of Germany, the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) are expected to attain seven ministries, according to an early report. The conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) are expected to have six ministries, while their sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), will have three. The SPD will have control over finance and defense, two key departments, while the CDU will lead the foreign ministry and the CSU will lead the interior ministry.

German Coalition Government: Ministries Allocation Agreement

Early reports suggest that Germany’s center-left Social Democrats (SPD), in the upcoming federal government, can expect seven ministries.

Simultaneously, the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) will likely secure six, and their Bavarian ally, the Christian Social Union (CSU), should get three.

An insider revealed these figures from the draft coalition agreement to Reuters ahead of the official announcement. This constitutes an extra ministry for the SPD in comparison to previous CDU coalitions.

Key departments of finance and defense will likely go to the SPD, while the CDU is slated to lead the Foreign Ministry. The CSU’s most crucial department is expected to be the Interior Ministry.

Each party individually decides who will head their respective ministries.

The SPD’s projected portfolio includes justice and consumer protection, labor and social affairs, climate protection, development aid, and housing and urban development.

Beyond the Chancellery’s head role, the CDU is allocated to the Economic Affairs and Energy Ministry, the Foreign Office, and the family, health, transport, and digitalization ministries.

The CSU is poised to control the research, technology and space, agriculture, and interior portfolios.
