TL/DR –

The author recounts their experience as a teacher and voter, stating surprise and concern over their vote in a North Carolina Supreme Court race being legally challenged. They draw a comparison to the past persecution and disenfranchisement of Quakers in England, pointing out parallels in how the integrity of voters is being questioned today. The writer concludes by criticizing Judge Jefferson Griffin for challenging the validity of over 60,000 votes and encourages him to concede gracefully and honor the will of the people.

Having been an educator for 33 years, imparting the value of good citizenship was paramount. I believe in leading by example, especially since our children are keenly observant.

At 85, I’ve committed my life to exemplary citizenship, including voting diligently. As a former English teacher, my approach to voting has always been meticulous. So, when my November election vote was legally challenged, I was taken aback.

Receiving a letter stating that my vote is among 60,000 being contested by Judge Jefferson Griffin, the unsuccessful candidate in the North Carolina Supreme Court race, made me question the security of my voting rights. Is my honesty under scrutiny?

Let me share a tale about the Quakers, who were fundamental in building North Carolina. Not only is their church the oldest in the state, but they were also leading figures in the abolition of slavery. Their influence pervades the state, from founding Guilford College to shaping our state’s culture.

However, their progressive views were deemed disruptive in England, leading to their ostracization from political institutions. Despite the threats and losses they faced, they remained steadfast. Their example resonates with our current struggles where dissenting voices are suppressed and rights are undermined. Despite this, we won’t be deterred.

In response to this challenge, the state board of elections has ensured our votes are considered. Justice Allison Riggs was chosen by the people of North Carolina to serve on the state’s highest court.

Judge Griffin’s questioning of over 60,000 North Carolinians’ integrity and attempts to overturn the people’s will indicate his readiness to overlook his judicial duties for partisan interests.

Judge Griffin, our future generations and history are watching. I urge you to respect the people’s choice and concede, as other defeated candidates have done.

Please, refocus your efforts on your current duties and serve the people of North Carolina.
