Delays and Cancellations at Florida Airports

Both Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International and Miami International airports in South Florida experienced hundreds of delays and cancellations on Monday, due to a combination of the government shutdown, severe weather, and spring break.

CBS News Miami reported passengers stranded on Monday, due to increased delays and cancellations. Long lines of passengers were also noted at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints in various terminals.

Passengers expressed their frustration and exhaustion. Terminals were overflowing with people, even onto the sidewalks outside. Bag drop-off lines also extended out of the building, adding to the inconvenience.

The bad weather caused some flights to be rerouted, leading to fuel shortages and flight cancellations. Other passengers encountered long TSA lines at checkpoints, increasing the wait times.

Airline CEOs have signed a letter to the U.S. Congress, urging them to fund the TSA during the partial government shutdown. Since the start of the shutdown, more than 300 TSA officers have resigned, and unscheduled absences have doubled.

Given the situation, passengers are advised to prepare for delays and arrive at the airport early.
