Mayor Eric Adams Addresses Federal Probes and Calls for Resignation
TL/DR –
Mayor Eric Adams is being heavily scrutinized in multiple federal probes, including one centered on his 2021 campaign finances. Adams remains loyal to his administration officials, despite two top members recently resigning and others having their homes raided by the FBI. Amid the controversies, Adams insists he remains focused on running the city, though City Councilwoman Alexa Aviles and State Senator Jabari Brisport have added their voices to calls for his resignation.
Mayor Eric Adams Grapples with Multiple Federal Probes and Calls for Resignation
Mayor Eric Adams navigated through an onslaught of queries from the press on Tuesday regarding the continuing federal investigations into his administration, including his 2021 campaign finances. Adams expressed determination not to be distracted by the inquiries, stating, “I got a city to run.”
The mayor’s struggles were compounded last week when two key officials, his attorney and the police commissioner, stepped down from their roles.
Adams maintains his focus on the city and its people, stating, “I’m focused on protecting the people of the city and the investigations will take care of themselves… that is not where my time is going to be consumed.”
Former chief counsel Lisa Zornberg was absent at this week’s press conference, reportedly resigning after advising Adams to dismiss officials implicated in the investigations, including senior advisor Tim Pearson and Deputy Mayor Phil Banks.
Pearson, currently dealing with four sexual assault lawsuits and investigations related to two migrant shelters, still receives support from Adams. The mayor praised his long-term allies and defended Pearson’s work in overseeing migrant contracts, claiming it saved the city millions, despite Pearson having no history in the field.
City Councilwoman Alexa Aviles and State Senator Jabari Brisport joined the growing calls for Adams to resign on Tuesday.
