Michael Douglas Speaks About Democracy at the 59th Karlovy Vary Film Festival

At the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF), Michael Douglas extolled democracy’s virtues, and warned against U.S. autocracy. He was there to present a restored version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the classic 1975 film co-produced by him and starring Jack Nicholson. The film, which earned Douglas an Academy Award, is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Following the receipt of a surprise festival award, Douglas discussed the perceived timeless quality of the film and the contemporary political climate in the U.S. He stressed the delicate nature of democracy and the potential risk of autocracy, drawing parallels with the democratic struggles of other nations.

Engaging in the topic of money’s influence on politics, Douglas noted the troubling trend of politics becoming a profit-making venture in the U.S. and globally. He emphasized the importance of political participation by individuals, and not just relying on others for change.

Addressing his future career plans, Douglas revealed he had no immediate work plans after a 60-year career. He stated that he was content to watch his wife, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, continue her own flourishing career. He also hinted at potential interest in a small independent film project.

Sharing anecdotes from the Cuckoo’s Nest film set, Douglas revealed actor Jack Nicholson’s initial reluctance to attend the Oscars. He lamented the film’s initial losses, but celebrated its eventual major category wins, including best picture and best director. He also confirmed that he remains in contact with Nicholson, who is in good health.

The restored version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was screened at KVIFF’s “Out of the Past” section. Co-producer Paul Zaentz, members of director Forman’s family, and Douglas himself were present. The film revolves around a rebellious gambler’s fight against authoritarian controls in a mental institution.

Douglas, who last visited KVIFF in 1998, was among the high-profile attendees of the 2025 edition, reflecting the festival’s reputation as a popular destination for Hollywood stars.
