Nancy Pelosi Endorses Connie Chan for Congress in San Francisco Race
TL/DR –
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has endorsed Connie Chan for her congressional seat. Chan is competing against State Sen. Scott Wiener, who is leading the race by double digits, and self-funding tech entrepreneur Saikat Chakrabarti. Pelosi’s endorsement was a surprise, especially since she previously indicated she would not make an endorsement, and it is viewed as a significant public rebuke of Wiener, who had always praised Pelosi.
Nancy Pelosi Endorses Connie Chan in San Francisco Congressional Race
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has endorsed San Francisco’s Connie Chan to succeed her in Congress, influencing the Democratic race to become San Francisco’s next representative. Pelosi retired last November after serving for 20 terms.
“This district, Congress, and Connie are all known to me,” said Pelosi in a video provided by her team. “I’m proud to endorse Connie Chan, and I urge you to join me in electing her to Congress.”
State Sen. Scott Wiener leads the race, according to recent polls, but Chan is closely trailing tech entrepreneur Saikat Chakrabarti. Former Republican Marie Huriabell is also in the race.
Pelosi’s unexpected endorsement of Chan, despite previously announcing she would not endorse in the race, is seen as a rebuke of Wiener, who has named Pelosi as his “hero”.
Pelosi commended Chan, an Asian American immigrant woman, for her strong leadership as a supervisor and chair of the Board of Supervisors’ budget committee.
“Connie’s story reflects the American dream — the hopes and courage of so many families who came to this country believing in opportunity, dignity, and democracy,” Pelosi said.
