TL/DR –

Mauritius’ incumbent Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, has conceded defeat in the parliamentary election and predicted a major loss for his political alliance. While official results have not been released, it is expected Navin Ramgoolam will take the role of Prime Minister for the third time at the head of his Alliance of Change coalition. The election campaign was marked with promises to improve the lives of Mauritians in the face of cost-of-living difficulties and featured a strong voter turnout of approximately 80%.

Mauritius’ incumbent prime minister Pravind Jugnauth has conceded defeat in the parliamentary election, anticipating a significant loss for his party, L’Alliance Lepep. Final results are awaiting official release, but opposition leader Navin Ramgoolam is projected to assume the role of prime minister for a third term under his Alliance of Change coalition.

Mauritian voters participated in Sunday’s election to choose representatives for parliament’s 62 seats from 68 parties and five alliances. Whoever achieves majority seats also claims the prime minister’s post. Jugnauth, 62, recently celebrated a landmark agreement to reclaim sovereignty over the Chagos Islands from the UK, but his campaign was overshadowed by a wire-tapping scandal involving leaked phone calls of politicians and journalists.

Both Jugnauth and Ramgoolam belong to families that have governed Mauritius since its independence in 1968. Ramgoolam, the son of Mauritius’ independence leader Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, has previously served as prime minister from 1995-2000 and 2005-2014.

Mauritius has maintained relative stability and growth post-independence, with a dominant economy based on tourism, financial services, and textile manufacturing. Despite a GDP per capita exceeding $10,000 in 2022, there are growing concerns about governance and corruption.
