98

TL/DR –

Operation Grayskull, initiated in 2020, led to a series of arrests including William Spearman, known as “Boss”, who was described by the Justice Department as one of the most significant purveyors of child sex abuse material worldwide. Spearman was one of at least 18 people convicted for leading and utilizing the dark web to share hundreds of thousands of unlawful sexually exploitative images of children. The operation was successful in shutting down four heavily trafficked dark web sites where violent images of child sexual abuse were traded and stored, having attracted more than 120,000 members and at least 100,000 visits in a single day.

FBI Agents Arrests Key Figure in Child Abuse Network ‘Operation Grayskull’

In November 2022, the FBI arrested a major child sex abuse material distributor named William Spearman, in Madison, Alabama. Approved by the FBI director, the FBI search warrant led to a high-value arrest that resulted in one of the most successful prosecutions of its kind.

Spearman’s arrest, guilty plea, and subsequent life sentence were part of a significant takedown of a large child abuse network operating on the dark web.

The Impact of Operation Grayskull

Introduced in 2020, Operation Grayskull led to the conviction of at least 18 people who used the dark web to share hundreds of thousands of unlawful sexually exploitative images of children.

Matthew Galeotti, Head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, emphasized the pervasiveness of this issue. He mentioned the troubling aspects of these activities, which remain largely unnoticed due to their occurrence on the dark web.

Among others convicted, Selwyn Rosenstein was sentenced to 28 years for operating a dark website, which prosecutors described as a thriving community of pedophiles sustained because of Rosenstein’s criminal acts.

Other Convictions and Future Measures

Another criminal convicted was Matthew Garrell of Raleigh, North Carolina. Prosecutors described Garrell’s involvement in the illegal activities as a complex and technologically sophisticated conspiracy. Several other convictions across the US and closure of related dark web sites have been achieved under Operation Grayskull.

Chris Delzotto, an acting FBI deputy assistant director, expressed the scope of the issue on the internet. He emphasized the importance of the investigation in the closure of four major dark web sites, further deterring future unlawful activities.

Scott MacFarlane, CBS News’ Justice correspondent, covered the entire operation.
