Pro-Trump Super PAC Receives $50 Million Donation from Timothy Mellon
TL/DR –
Timothy Mellon, heir to a Gilded Age fortune, donated $50 million to a super PAC supporting Donald Trump. This donation was made the day after the ex-president was convicted of 34 felonies and is among the biggest single disclosed contributions ever. Despite giving generous donations to both Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running as an independent, it’s not clear who Mellon will continue to support.
Timothy Mellon Donates $50M to Trump-supporting Super PAC
Timothy Mellon, a reclusive heir to a Gilded Age fortune, donated $50 million to a super PAC backing Donald Trump just a day post Trump’s conviction for 34 felonies. This gift is among the largest single disclosed contributions ever.
This donation is poised to significantly impact the 2024 race. The pro-Trump super PAC, Make America Great Again Inc., plans to reserve $100 million in advertising through Labor Day.
Mellon’s contribution made up a substantial part of the $70 million that the super PAC raised in May. Mellon is now the first donor to give $100 million in disclosed federal contributions in this year’s election, making him a crucial contributor to super PACs backing Trump and independent candidate, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Mellon’s support for Kennedy is unclear, as he has previously divided his contributions between the two candidates. His most recent contribution to Kennedy’s super PAC was a $5 million in April.
Mellon’s $50 million gift will significantly bolster pro-Trump forces in countering the financial edge President Biden and his allies currently enjoy. Casino billionaire Miriam Adelson also plans to fund a pro-Trump super PAC.
Despite being a member of the wealthy Mellon family, Timothy Mellon emerged as a significant donor during the Trump administration. Among his significant contributions is a $50 million donation to a project for the private construction of a border wall in Texas. Mellon donated $53 million in stocks to help fund this project.
Mellon’s new book, “panam.captain,” is due to be released next month, chronicling his work with Pan Am Systems. His previous self-published autobiography was withdrawn after controversial passages became public.
In a rare 2020 interview with Bloomberg, Mellon appreciated Trump’s follow-through on his promises.
