Singapore’s Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Faishal Ibrahim, resigned over allegations of inappropriate interactions with a woman, disclosed Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
“Most interactions occurred online, and occasionally at public events,” said Wong.
Both involved parties accused each other of harassment; the police are investigating the charges, Wong added.
The People’s Action Party, known for its spotless reputation, has been plagued by several political scandals recently.
In 2023, then Transport Minister Subramaniam Iswaran was implicated in a corruption investigation alongside Malaysian billionaire hotelier Ong Beng Seng. Iswaran later admitted to accepting gifts from Ong worth over 380,000 Singapore dollars ($294,000).
Two high-ranking members of Singapore’s largest opposition party also resigned in 2023 over an admitted affair.
Wong clarified that no crime had been committed in Faishal’s case but questioned whether Faishal’s behavior met standards expected of a political office holder and member of parliament.
Faishal, a member of parliament since 2006, resigned from his cabinet position and the ruling People’s Action Party.
In his resignation letter, Faishal acknowledged a lapse of judgment in his handling of the interactions and his failure to establish clearer boundaries early on.
Wong expressed his regret at Faishal’s departure from politics under these circumstances.
