Secret Service Director Worried About Agency Morale After Independent Review

Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe expressed his deep concern about the impact of an independent review panel’s findings on agency morale. These findings, in relation to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, have prompted discussions about the need for fundamental reform within the agency.

Rowe, in an email to Secret Service employees, highlighted that “deep flaws” within the agency were identified by the bipartisan four-member panel. The report recommended a major overhaul and focus on “core protective mission”.

The criticisms of the Secret Service under President Biden’s direction have raised concerns about the agency’s morale, given the burdensome hours worked by many employees. Rowe, in his message to the workforce, voiced these concerns.

The assassination attempt on Trump, which occurred in July at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, led to enhanced protection for major presidential and vice presidential candidates. However, Rowe warned that these measures strained the agency’s resources.

Rowe had reservations about some recommendations, such as the proposed elevation of the Office of Protective Operations. He indicated that the agency was taking the panel’s findings seriously, particular those relating to the agency’s investigative missions.

The shooting event at Trump’s rally has drawn significant scrutiny towards the Secret Service, especially regarding the access the gunman had to a rooftop near the former President. The independent review panel, along with the FBI, congressional committees and a bipartisan House task force, are investigating the shooting incident.
