TL/DR –

New York state Sen. James Skoufis has ended his bid to become the next chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), stating he endorses Minnesota Democratic Party Chair Ken Martin for the role. Following disappointing results in November’s elections, Skoufis had entered the race with a promise for major change to the DNC, speaking to rebuilding the party, trust with voters, and a focus on working class priorities. Skoufis was first elected to the state Senate in 2018 and has won eight elections by large margins in deeply Republican territories.

New York Sen. Skoufis Bows Out of DNC Chair Race

New York Sen. James Skoufis has announced his departure from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair race on Thursday, while endorsing Minnesota Democratic Party Chair Ken Martin as his preferred successor.

“Following the surprising November election results, I decided to leap into the DNC Chair contest, using my winning record in conservative areas to make a significant difference,” Skoufis explained. “Although I started without any national recognition, I’m proud of our campaign’s impact on the DNC and the broader party.”

Representing the 42nd state Senate District in the Hudson Valley, including Middletown, New Windsor, and West Point, Skoufis, first joined the state Senate in 2018. His political background also includes service on the state Assembly and Woodbury Town Board.

In the previous election, Skoufis achieved re-election by a 14-point margin in a district where Vice President Kamala Harris lost by 10 points. He shared views about the Democratic Party’s future with Capital Tonight where he emphasized the challenges of a possible Donald Trump’s return and a Republican-led Congress.

Skoufis leveraged these results and his outsider status when he announced his candidacy for the DNC job in December. He emphasized the need for the Democratic Party to show its commitment to working families and fight vehemently to win races across the country.

The DNC’s next leader will be chosen in a February election.
