Donald J. Trump’s Criminal Trial: Prosecution and Defense Rests

The historic criminal trial of former American President Donald J. Trump enters its final phase with both sides resting their cases after six weeks of intense proceedings.

Deliberations by 12 jurors in Manhattan are set to commence next week, determining if Mr. Trump is guilty following weeks of sifting through financial documents and riveting testimonies.

The ex-president is accused of falsifying 34 business records related to a hush-money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, who claims a 2006 sexual encounter with Mr. Trump in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Prosecutors allege that Trump hid the payment, made prior to the 2016 election.

Mr. Trump vehemently denies the charges and the alleged affair. A conviction could potentially result in imprisonment or probation for him.

Defense Lawyer Attempts to Discredit Key Witness

In an effort to undermine key witness Michael D. Cohen, defense attorney Todd Blanche accused him of dishonesty during his cross-examination.

Cohen testified that he had received authorization from Mr. Trump to make the hush-money payment, after a call lasting 1 minute 36 seconds to Trump’s bodyguard, Keith Schiller. Cohen maintains he had a brief conversation with Schiller before speaking to Mr. Trump.
